Dog Sledding – An Arctic Legacy

Dog sledding has a long and rich history in the arctic regions, where it was once the main form of transportation. The sled is typically driven by a musher, who stands on the back of the sled and uses voice commands and physical cues to direct the team of dogs. Sled dogs are typically large, powerful breeds with thick coats, such as Alaskan Malamutes and Siberian Huskies. These dogs are known for their endurance, strength, and intelligence, and require regular exercise and training to stay in top condition.

What to Expect During Dog Sledding in Tromsø

When you arrive for the Self-Drive Dog Sledding tour, our partner Tromsø Villmarkssenter will provide you with thermal overalls to keep you warm in the cold weather. Experienced dog sledding guides will show you how to handle the sled before you head out on the trail.

During the tour, you and a friend will have your own sled to drive, and you'll switch in the middle of the track so that both of you get a chance to experience the thrill of mushing. You'll travel about four kilometers on your sled, and you'll get to meet around 300 four-legged friends up close.

Two guests share a sled with 5-7 dogs, and professional guides will lead the group in a separate sled. After the ride, you'll enjoy a meal of Bidos, prepared with reindeer meat, broth, and vegetables to warm you up. Vegetarian meal options are available upon request.

To participate in self-driven dog sledding, you must be in good physical condition and at least 16 years old. Don't miss out on this unique and exciting activity that offers both humans and dogs a fun and challenging way to enjoy the great outdoors. Book your ride today!

Amazing cruise even though the weather was not great the tour operator did everything to help make the trip fun. Saw various birds and even managed to catch a fish. Food was also great and plentiful, even catered for food allergies.

Stunningly beautiful. As a person whose been to many remote places the sights here were truly stunning. Also the man who led the tour is absolutely hilarious.

It was a really really good experience, very well organized and father and son were a really good crew. We had done to the wale safari too which was also a good trip, Thomas is a really nice and friendly guy. We can only say we will do it again if we stay in tromsø.

Amazing trip. The guides were fun, friendly and helpful. They shared stories about them and interesting information about the area. The captain was great at getting close to the whales, we got there before everyone else each time.
